About Stephanie Hartshorn

As a kid in the backseat of the family car, I entertained myself with endless narratives about the old houses, barns, shops, abandoned cars, and random farm equipment scattered along the landscape. That fascination never left me. When I take to the road now, my trips are all about small town detours and spending as much time as I can on side roads, gathering my "stories" to paint. It's a miracle to check-in to a hotel before nightfall. I find it extraordinary to consider that my family has had its roots in Colorado for six generations. I can't help but think I hear the deep echoes of my ancestors in the landscape. I feel privileged to live and have raised my own family here.

The Collection

"The body of work I've created for the Benson Hotel evokes both nostalgia for and an honest snapshot of the working livelihoods of the west. These pieces capture the honesty of industry, whether it be farming or infrastructure, and a nod to a way of life I've seen change within my lifetime. It brings me a great deal of satisfaction, as an artist (and former architect), bringing light and remembrance to the supporting cast of daily life that is often passed over, forgotten or disappearing..."
